Fairy God Doctor?

I think I am seeing a fake shrink.

I tried to look him up on Aetna's Docfind today because I am sick and I needed to reschedule our appointment and realized I lost his number. Couldn't find him in the online search engine. I suddenly remembered that it had seemed weird that first time he called me--I'd left messages with many therapists that day I went on Aetna's online Doc search and I hadn't recalled ever leaving a message with a therapist with such a memorable last name (Heyman). So when he called me at work and told me his office was right around the corner from where I lived and was so nice, I thought he was like a fairy godfather delivered to me from above--I decided to ignore the nagging question in my head: "Did I even call this guy in the first place?"

The customer service rep at Aetna told me my wonderful shrink with the great last name (ha! Heyman. love to say it and write it) is not and has never been a member of Aetna.

Spooooky.

Either he is an apparition, or, I am telling me deepest, darkest secrets to a very sweet and wise old man who takes copious notes in the basement of a brownstone with shag carpeting right near my apartment.

My Brother's Med School is Better Than...

My brother said he didn't start a written blog to document his experiences as a med student in Tel Aviv because he's not as eloquent a writer as me, but I think the real reason is he didn't want to flat out say that he outshines me as a performer by 110%. His VIDEO blog is hilarious. Watch this third installment of his video blog if you want a laugh:

Labor Day Weekend

Had to go home with a stomach flu…Just watched “Lady in the Water.” Didn’t realize how attractive M. Night Shyamalan is.

Had an excellent Labor Day weekend. On Friday night our department head took us to the carousel in Central Park for a ride and a picnic. I think I should do that every time I’m feeling stressed. Except for the impulse I have afterward to get a good hand washing. Luckily as I was walking down 6th ave thinking about that very thing, one of the salespeople at the soap store “Sabon” asked my colleague and I if we would like a free hand washing. Well would you look at that? How timely. Of course I did.

Friday night, J and I had dinner at Casa Mono. It took us four tries to get the right bottle of wine. But despite that, we had an excellent meal. I’ve decided that their vegetable based dishes are really amazing—since corn is in season, I’m ordering it as often as I see it on a menu. In addition to a hot corn salad, we had piquillo peppers with coarse sea salt, and a salad with manchego cheese and this sweet bacos-like topping. I also loved the non-veg offering of pork with pickled watermelon and melons. Sooo good.

On Saturday we drove with E to Rhode Island. Six hours of traffic. We had a quick stop at Johnny Ads for a lobster roll and fried clams. At one point we all had to pee so badly and of course at that exact moment we were stuck in bottleneck traffic. I contemplated running out of the car and peeing in a bush. I don’t even do port-a-potties. We finally drove into “town” and found a Dairy Queen. E and I ran out and I schemed a way to beat her to the bathroom. Found out there was no bathroom. Booked it to the car, and waited another fifteen minutes for the light to change. Eureka! McDonald’s down the road! I ran out of the car and dashed across the street before we even pulled in. The car behind me called out “if you’re switching cars you might as well jump into mine!”

We made it to the hotel right as the bus to the wedding was pulling away. We called a cab. Cab arrives, and of course, our cabbie is a recovering heroin addict, or at least acted like one. His dispatcher actually called him “an asshole” while we were in the car. We told him we were going to 101 Ferry Rd. “Yes, I’ll take you to the ferry.” “No, we’re not going to the ferry, we’re going to a manor house for a wedding on Ferry Road.” “Yeah, yeah. The ferry. I take you right there.” We went like this on and on for about 45 minutes. Somehow J got us to the wedding. Just as we pulled up the drive, the cabbie admitted to us, as if this were any excuse, “I’m not from Rhode Island. I’m a New Yorker. I’m from Queens.”

Once at the wedding, an old lady cast us a disapproving glance as we tried to enter the house and make our way to the ceremony. She took a look at J in his tuxedo (he was overdressed—the invitation called for “formal attire” but everyone else was wearing suits including the groom) and asked, “You’re with the band, right?”

The wedding was PERFECT. So gorgeous. It was a blast getting to see college friends and high school friends together (yay matchmaking! Joe is my college friend and Kath is my high school friend. They met at E’s birthday). There were oysters, a great sunset, champagne, Armenian dancing, and stargazing.
